Secret Service Wireless Invisible Headset
Finally released to the public, the Secret Service grade Invisible Headset is the ultimate spy gadget communications tool for extreme covert communications operations. This is the smallest device of its kind. The micro-sized earbud is smaller than a hearing aid which fits snugly and securely in the ear canal. A small invisible thread allows safe removal after use. The wireless transmission is completely silent and automatically picked up by the micro-earbud from the transmission necklace. The invisible headset is the worlds smallest device anywhere without the need to take an impression of the ear canal.
How it Works
All you need is a cell phone and an assistant to carry a conversation, or just listen to the audio from the earbud which can be wirelessly attached to a cell phone or any device with an audio output jack. Right before the event, put the micro spy earpiece in your ear and wear the transmitter coil necklace around your neck, under your clothes within a few feet from the micro ear bud.
Make a call from your cell phone and a friend or associate should be on the other end of the phone, talking to you with whatever information you need. You will be able to instantly provide dates, names, numbers, instructions, stock quotes or any relevant information from your assistant. You will be a human encyclopedia, without anyone ever knowing how you do it.
Sound Clarity
The sound clarity offers superior quality for speech applications and is guaranteed to be free of excessive noise suitable enough to listen to music. more info

Lee Williams, Chief Executive Officer of the Symbian Foundation has confirmed that Symbian, the mobile operating system that powers many smartphones has gone open source.
As for the rationale for going open source, all companies need to evolve their product or risk the possibility of becoming stagnant. As a proprietary OS, Symbian had a tall order to fill which is even more of a concern considering the strengths of Google Android. It’s for this reason that the foundation may have elected to go open source believing that employing third party software developers will result in a better operating system and third party applications.
With this new development, Symbian is also looking to expand and Williams sees a future perhaps some one to two years down the road when we may see tablets and netbooks powered by the Symbian OS.
Williams states “It’s very likely that, in the next year or two, you would see such a product hit the marketplace. A lot of companies are experimenting with PDA-tablet-style form factors, also for stereo systems, and internet-connected devices running low power on primarily ARM architecture.”
The move to tablet PCs and netbooks will mean that the Symbian operating system will need to be hardware independent, something that the Wild Ducks project is involved with on the smartphone side, not to mention that Symbian has also been successfully ported to an Intel Atom processor based platform.

If you’re an Apple iPhone application developer, you may have experienced first hand some of the challenges of having your software application approved by the Apple review team so that it can become available for download through the app store. The reasons for rejected applications can sometimes be vague and/or subjective.
Apple does offer guidelines with best practices as well as helpful hints and tips that they believe may ease the application process. Recently, a new post discussed using the Core Location Framework to enhance your iPhone app. The framework makes use of the integrated GPS and allows the software developer to provide the iPhone user with location specific information such as local weather, nearby ATM machines and restaurants.
This is all good and handy, but within the post, Apple makes a point of stating if you use the Core Location Framework, you must get the iPhone users consent first and once you have the consent, your application cannot be used to mainly “enable mobile advertisers to deliver targeted ads based on user’s location.” If the review team does find that this is the case, they will return the app for correction and rewrite.
From Apple’s perspective, they do not want applications that will diminish the iPhone users experience as that reflects negatively upon them. However, many in the industry believe that with Apple’s recent purchase of Quattro Wireless, an advertising network and mobile marketing platform, Apple may be trying to retain a larger portion of the lucrative advertising dollars to themselves.

The Dell Mini 5, an Android based device has cleared another hurdle, receiving FCC approval for the US. With its 5-inch 800×480 touchscreen display, some have questioned how to exactly classify this device. Is it a mobile phone, mini tablet or portable internet device.
From the FCC filing, we do know that the Dell Mini 5 will include 3G, WiFi and HSPA connectivity which makes it compatible with the mobile networks of AT&T in the US as well as Bell, Telus and Rogers in Canada. It is also believed to come packing with a 5 megapixel front facing digital camera, integrated Bluetooth technology and a SIM card slot.
No firm release date for the Dell Mini 5 has been announced, but Michael Dell did say at the World Economic Forum that it would be out in a couple of months and receiving FCC approval does make it inch a step closer towards a US launch.

As a young lad, you may have had a bike light that was pedal powered, getting brighter the faster you pedaled and dimming when you slowed down. RollerGen uses the same concept of pedal power to recharge the gadgets of today.
RollerGen is a product of Santa Clara, CA based High Tide and was nominated for the 2010 greener gadgets design competition. RollerGen is a bike mounted high power generator that can create ten times the power of some of the other commercial bicycle generators using strictly the renewable resource of the human body, leg power.
As you ride, the device generates energy which is stored in a small battery called BOS (bar of soap). This stored energy can then be used to power any USB gadget be it a mobile phone, GPS unit, iPhone or any other gadgets and gizmos you may be packing.
I’m sure this product works well in fair weather conditions, but how well does it work in the rain? It also seems to be quite expensive, priced at $495.

IBM scientists have reportedly created the worlds fastest graphene transistor, one that is capable of 100 billion cycles/second or 100GHz. The technology used to develop the new transistor is compatible to that used in today’s advanced silicon device fabrication and consists of using wafer-scale and epitaxially grown graphene.
Graphene is a material that is a single atom thick layer of carbon atoms and has unique electrical, mechanical, optical and thermal properties. It is because Graphene allows electrons to propagate at extremely high speeds that IBM believes it will form the foundation of the next generation transistors and could eventually replace the silicon transistor. Would this mean that we would need to rename Silicon Valley if this ever came to pass?
This type of breakthrough technology can lead to faster processors and computers, but like many of these stories, this is a research study at this time. We’re still quite some time away before this technology ever made it’s way into consumer electronics.

If you’re not familiar with the name Linus Torvalds, that’s ok, he’s the person who created the Linux kernel which forms the cornerstone of the Android operating system that runs the Google Nexus One.
On his personal blog, Torvalds mentions his dislike for mobile phones, mostly because to him, they are a nuisance that would just ring at the most inappropriate time such as while reading, working or doing whatever. Although he did have a dislike for cellphones, he did have the original Google G1 which he used to play games such as Solitaire and Galaga on long flights.
It turns out that Torvalds has strong feelings for the Google Nexus One smartphone, stating that the “Nexus One is a winner”. He bought the Google phone online once it was confirmed that pinch to zoom was enabled. The Nexus One now goes with him on his road trips with Google navigation functioning as his in-car GPS unit.
Recently, it was announced that Google was struggling with Nexus One sales, so an unsolicited celebrity endorsement such as this couldn’t have come at a better time.

Call it your own personal virtual assistant, but Siri Inc. has developed an Apple iPhone application that claims to use AI (artificial intelligence) like characteristics to fulfill your personal requests. The software application works through voice activation. You only need to speak your request into the iPhone and the personal assistant will scour the necessary information for you.
Where this application differs from one of the large search engines is Siri consolidates data from a number of different services that would otherwise require the use of several different applications. Some of the data partners with which Siri is involved include Yelp, Rotten Tomatoes, CitySearch, OpenTable, MovieTickets and StubHub.
Siri can offer an iPhone user information on movie start times, local city weather, restaurants, dry cleaners or locations of ATM machines. Users can even ask something like where can I get a haircut and Siri will offer up barber shops that are in walking distance of the user.
Because Siri is said to include cognitive software and advanced speech recognition, the application is said to get smarter over time returning more targeted results that are more in line with the users personal preferences, hence the AI angle.
Currently, this “Do Engine” is available as an iPhone application, but Chief Executive Dag Kittlaus has indicated that plans are in the works to also port the application to Android powered smartphones and the RIM Blackberry.
If you are interested in the application, it is available as a free download that has been optimized for the iPhone 3GS but seems to work fine on the iPhone 3G as well. OS 3.1 is the minimum operating system for this application.

Last week, we got word that Telus Mobility would be carrying the Motorola Milestone. Although we knew that Best Buy would the electronics store to carry the Android powered smartphone, we didn’t have an official launch date with many believing it would not be until next month before we saw the new phone.
This has since changed. Best Buy has confirmed that Thursday, February 18th is when consumers will be able to pick up the Motorola smartphone. Until then, Best Buy is taking in-store preorders if you’re keen to be one of the first to get your hands on this handheld device.
We still don’t have confirmation about final pricing or service plans but the rumor is $199 with a 3 year plan or $549 with no plan.

Toshiba has received FDA clearance for their latest medical gadget, the Viamo, a portable laptop sized ultrasound system with radiological capacity. The new device is said to improve bedside patient care offering imaging technology and ultrasound exams without the need of moving patients. As a result of this, the Viamo can improve patient care, especially for the immobile patient without the need for bulkier cart based systems. The unit has been developed to complete a variety of different patient exams including vascular, emergency, pediatric and general radiology.
The device is also a blend of old and new technology, meeting the needs of tech savvy medical practitioners as well as those that prefer basic controls. As such, Viamo can be operated using a touchscreen display interface or it can be used the old fashion way with a series of knobs and buttons.

Of all the major sports (football, basketball, baseball, hockey) it is the season ending NFL Superbowl which generates the most interest (and Las Vegas bets) each year. Every aspect of the big game is finely controlled from the singing of the national anthem, to the half time show and to the Superbowl ads which turn out to be an event in themselves.
This year, CBS will also try and enhance their TV broadcast of the NFL game by using some new special effects using Orad TVs Motion Video Play (MVP) system. Orad is in the business of providing both video and graphic enhancement solutions for all types of sporting events and this years Superbowl will include MVP’s Magnifying Glass feature.
The way this special effect works is you may be watching the game and the referee makes a questionable call. Was it a right call or a wrong call? From the original camera angle, you may have a hard time in determining the accuracy of the call, but the Magnifying Glass feature offers a tighter zoom of the play that allows you to verify the call.
The Orad Magnifying Glass is not limited to just a single frame, but will be dynamic throughout the football game, allowing CBS to invoke it at any time that they choose. It just remains to be seen how often they use this special effect.

January has come and gone and the results of last months sales figures for the Google Nexus One are in. It appears that sales of the Google smartphone topped out at 80,000 units for the month. The trend appears to be a continuation of week one when Google saw 20,000 units sold.
For an ordinary smartphone, these figures would be considered respectable, but most people in the tech world had very high expectations of Google simply because, well, it’s Google. For comparisons sake, the original Apple iPhone that launched in June 2007 saw 600,000 units sold in its first month while the Motorola Droid saw 250,000 units sell in its first month back in November 2009.
All is not doom and gloom though. Remember, both the iPhone and the Droid had better mobile carrier support then the Nexus One which is restricted to T-Mobile. Additionally, although the sales figures haven’t been strong, they have been consistent through the month. If sales of the Google Nexus One can remain consistent until the Google phone gets picked up by Vodafone and Verizon this spring, we could see some much better numbers by the time summer roles around.
Could it be that the Nexus One is just a late bloomer? I guess time will tell.

Google may have started out as a simple search engine back in 1996 by two Standford students, Larry Page and Sergey Brin, but the online search engine has quickly grown over the last 14 years. Today, Google Inc. plays a huge role for anyone that surfs the Internet. They have their major property, Google Search, but there are also equally important products and services that fall under the Google brand.

Tomonobu Higashikawa has represented some of Google’s properties in the form of a new Rubik’s Cube puzzle. There’s Google proper, News, Blogger, Gmail, Calender and Maps. If you enjoy puzzle solving, this cube design may just offer a new take on the Rubik’s cube to generate additional interest in the game.

Game designs such as this show what people can dream up. I’m wondering when we’re going to see a new Monopoly board designed that features Google properties and what would be the equivalent of Park Place and Boardwalk, Google Search and Google Docs?
If you like puzzles and games, be sure to check out some of the other themed Rubik’s cube puzzles such as the stained glass design and the Super Mario Brothers cube.

It’s been a while since we last featured an alarm clock. Past alarm clock design inspirations on Coated have required the owner to complete all kinds of skill testing activities before the set alarm would turn off. For instance, with the bomb diffusion clock, you would of course have to disable the bomb or a loud alarm would sound. There was also Clocky, the crazy clock that would wheel itself away while ringing if you fail to turn it off on time.
Today we came across a clock that would bring out the competitive spirit within the basketball fan. The device is called the Basketball Hoop alarm clock and the premise is easy. Make the hoop and silence the morning wake up alarm.
It sounds pretty easy but try making this shot first thing in the morning after a good nights sleep. If you play fair and take the shot from the bed, there is the added pressure of missing the hoop and losing the ball, which means you’ll have to drag yourself out of bed in search of the basketball. In the end, I guess the alarm clock ultimately did it’s job and get you out of bed.
This unusual alarm clock is available through Uxsight. Now if only we can find a football theme alarm clock for tomorrow morning considering that it’s Super Bowl Sunday and there’s lots of things to prepare before the big game.

Samsung fans around the rest of the world have their eyes on South Korea these days, with the recent release of the Samsung M100S. Not only does it have the trappings of a powerful, functional smartphone, but it also runs on Android 2.1 — something many Samsung fans have been waiting for.
Some people insist that the M100S is actually the Galaxy 2, rumored to be in development for a while. In a way, it does seem like it — the M100S sports a 3.7″ AMOLED display, GPS, Wi-Fi, a camera packing 5 megapixels, and mobile digital TV reception. And of course, Samsung fans will like the fact that it still comes with Samsung’s TouchWiz user interface.
A definite strong point for the M100S would be its central button. It very cleanly avoided being a trackball, a mistake that BlackBerry and the Google Nexus One made.
At this point, it’s not completely clear whether or not the M100S will make its way to other parts of the world. But it’s still good to know that Samsung is moving forward to newer, better versions of the Android mobile OS. I have a good feeling we’ll be seeing a similar offering when the Mobile World Congress rolls around.

One of the biggest sore points with the Apple iPhone was the unbelievably stringent offerings made by AT&T. Sling Media’s SlingPlayer App, for instance, has been trying for a while to stream into iPhones via 3G, instead of just relying on WiFi connections. AT&T had previously and repeatedly said no to such an idea, arguing that the 3G network is already too crowded. Now, AT&T seems to have changed its mind.
In a move that many people see as a “gimme” to Apple, AT&T is now allowing the SlingPlayer App to stream over 3G. There’s been talk that Apple and AT&T’s relationship with each other isn’t really in the best of health, so AT&T may be looking for ways to keep the lucrative partnership running.
While this should be good news for iPhone users, it should also be noted that if the SlingPlayer App does clog the 3G network, AT&T just might start charging extra for the data usage. Let’s hope this doesn’t happen.
SlingPlayer is now available on iTunes, but it’ll probably be another week or so before it becomes fully functional over 3G. It’s likely to be a hit with iPhone users, even with the $30 price tag it’ll come with.

We’re familiar with Google Earth and Google Maps, but could the popular search engine be planning enhancements to their mapping service with something called Google Store Views?
Search Engine Land received word that a Google representative had recently visited a New York retailer called Oh Nuts to snap pictures from within the store. Pictures were snapped every six feet throughout the store and in every direction. Pictures were also taken of products being sold.
Google Street View is a cool service that lets you take a look at streets in your backyard as well as in other foreign cities. Could Google Store View just be an extension of this service. As you take a virtual trip down any street through Google Street View, you come across an interesting store and decide take a virtual tour of the store and the products that it carries.
It’s an interesting idea but no further details are available and Google had “nothing further to announce at this time.” The big challenge would be to keep the digital images from within Store Views fresh and updated. Maybe real time data using the store security cameras could be used, something similar to a project being undertaken by Austin Abrams, but then those would have to be networked and someone would have to foot the bill. It will be interesting to see how this develops if it ever does.

The Slacker Radio app which was previously available for the Apple iPhone and the Research In Motion Blackberry has now been ported over to the Palm. US and Canadian Palm owners that have either the Palm Pre, Pre Plus and Pixi will now be able to listen to their favorite music thanks to the free application that has been released.
The free Slacker application maintains a feature list with which we are familiar and allows music lovers to create custom channels, select between 120 expert-programmed genres as well tune in over 10,000 artist stations.
The user interface is said to be both quite intuitive as well as user friendly and affords the listener the option to personalize stations based upon one’s music preference. Listeners will also be able to tag favorite songs, ban music they dislike as well receive a wealth of digital information about the music playing such as album reviews, musician biographies and a peak ahead album and artist preview.

Prior to the Apple iPad launch, there was much speculation on the tablet name, with one of the front runners being the iTablet. With Apple forgoing on this name choice, it looks like X2, a UK technology company has picked up on it and have released their own tablet PC called the X2 iTablet.
Unlike the Apple iPad which is powered by an iPhone OS and not the desktop OS X, the iTablet will be powered by Microsoft’s Windows 7 or optionally a Linux operating system. Aside from the OS, the iTablet include a 1.6GHz Intel processor, 250GB hard drive, 3G and WiFi support, 1.3MP webcam, HDMI port and 3 USB ports. You’ll also have your choice of either a 12.1-inch widescreen XGA or a 10.2-inch widescreen TFT when the iTablet launches this April with pricing still to come.

If you own the original Xbox, now’s the time to maximize your online gaming because Microsoft has confirmed that as of April 15th, they are discontinuing Xbox Live support for the original Xbox games as well as the original Xbox console.
According to Marc Whitten, Xbox Live General Manager, this was not an easy decision but one that was necessary as “To reach our aspiration, we need to make changes to the service that are incompatible with our original Xbox v1 games.”
The version 1 console did have its time and place but perhaps it is time for users to move up to a newer console? The move to an Xbox 360 will allow gamers to enjoy a richer gaming experience with the latest Xbox 360 games as well as take advantage of new technology that is coming down the road in the form of Project Natal which is Microsoft’s upcoming controller-free gaming experience.
The end of support may also finally mean the end of the limitation which restricted the number of Xbox Live friends to 100, something that was long suspected to be in place due to the version 1 console.
X10 is now under a week away, perhaps today’s news will set the stage for some interesting Xbox 360 announcements next week.

Here comes another novelty gadget by way of the wholesale electronics company ChinaVision. Known as The Machismo, this cell phone is being dubbed as the “world’s hottest cigarette lighter mobile phone”.
With many countries introducing new anti-smoking laws and warning their citizens about the risks of smoking, Machismo bucks the trend. With a product name like Machismo, it’s geared towards the tough guy and is supposed to simplify life by reducing the amount of things you need to carry in your pocket when you go for a night on the town. Why carry a separate cigarette lighter and a cell phone when you can downsize with just one, the Machismo?
Aside from the lighter, this is a triband mobile phone that works on the 900, 1800, and 1900 MHz GSM frequencies. Additionally, it includes a 2.5-inch touchscreen display, a 1.3MP digital camera, video recorder, MP3/MP4 music player, a 2GB TF microSD card and dual-SIM slots that supports up to two distinct phone numbers, perhaps a business number and a personal number.
If you think Machismo is expensive, its not, with the unlocked phone costing $68.51 or about the price of 2 cartons of smokes.

When patients have been in a serious accident or have suffered from a medical condition that places them in a vegetative state, there have often been questions raised as to whether they can hear or are aware of what’s going on in their hospital room. Often, as a form of comfort as well as therapy, doctors and other medical practitioners involved in the patients case encourage family members to speak with the patient, but do they hear what is being said or not?
The New England Journal of Medicine describes a medical study in which out of 54 unconscious patients, one man was able to respond yes and no to questions that were addressed to him. The man was officially pronounced to be in a clinical vegetative state five years earlier but his yes and no responses to questions could be observed through brain scans that were conducted with MRI (Medical Resonance Imaging).
Yes and No responses trigger nerves in different parts of the brain to fire. Hence when the patient was asked if his father’s name was Thomas, his brain scan reflected his response as No whereas when asked if his father’s name was Alexander, the scan correctly showed his response as yes.
This is an interesting study that will no doubt raise some questions as to the ethical treatment of vegetative patients as well about the human mind what is consciousness.

This giant arcade joystick is for extreme gamers that want to bring the real arcade game like experience home. The joystick is called the Hori Real Arcade Pro Premium VLX and will be available in Japan next month.
At the time of release, two versions of this joystick will be made available, one for the Sony PS3 and another for the Xbox 360. Pricing for this gadget has been set at ¥30,000 or $330US which means only the most hardcore of gamers will pick one of these up.
If the controller and button positions have a familiar look, it’s because they are fashioned after the control panel seen in the Vewlix arcade cabinet. These are the same cabinets that are used for the arcade game Street Fighter IV.
The controller does look huge and heavy and may not be well suited for resting on your lap during game play, but how many people can say they have an authentic looking game controller? If you’re outside of Japan and want this device, expect to pay even more for import/export charges just because of its size and weight.

Why is it that so many people hate going to the Dentists office and loath that time of year when they’re due for their six month checkup? There’s probably a few reasons, for some it may be the lecture about flossing more and brushing after every meal but for many, it’s probably the fear of having a cavity that needs to be fixed which means needles and that darn drilling.
This is probably why some dentists now offer sedation dentistry for their dental patients. Not only does it reduce stress for the patient, but it probably makes the job of the dentist just that much easier as they don’t need to deal with a squirming patient.
Hopefully things are going to change for the better due to the Icon system which was developed by dental-materials manufacturer DMG. With this new technology, a dentist will place a plastic applicator in the area where the new cavity is forming. One the applicator is in position, a hydrochloric acid solution is applied which etches the outer enamel, exposing the inner tooth structure. This is then followed by an application of a resin into the cavity which is then triggered to harden using blue light.
It may well turn out that DMG is the new hero in the fight against cavities.

In the summer of 2008, Hewlett Packard launched a 40-foot, 22 rack portable data center that sold for $1.2 million dollars, something that was beyond the reach of most enterprise clients.
HP is back again with a smaller scale portable data center or Performance Optimized Data Center (POD). The new data center is half the price ($600,000) and half the size (20-feet) of its big brother. The fully enclosed POD comes with 10 50u racks, air, water and power hookups and can house up to 5,000 large form factor hard drives or 1,500 computing nodes. Each POD is made to order with delivery occurring about six weeks after HP receives a purchase order.
POD technology is being targeted towards government agencies, institutions and large enterprises that would benefit from using portable data centers that are linked together. The advantage of this architecture is scalability as PODs could be added or swapped out as needed to improve an organizations computing performance.
It should also be noted that the $600,000 HP price tag only covers the POD itself. All network and server hardware as well software and other related IT costs would be additional and above and beyond the initial layout.

Apple has always been a good media machine, capable of building hype around future technologies that they are planning on implementing. For weeks leading up to the official January 27, 2010 Apple iPad announcement, there was considerable buzz about what the name would be and what new features would be included in the new tablet.
With the announcement of the Apple iPad tablet done and over with, the buzz about Apple products has not really slowed down. Rather, the attention has moved from the iPad tablet to the next generation of the Apple iPhone.
As the rumor mill begins to churn, we are starting to hear that the new iPhones will feature 720p high definition as the Apple device will support 1280 pixel wide video or a total pixel count of 921,000 which equates to 1280 x 720 or 720p. It’s not quite clear at this time if HD will be available for both video recording and playback or just playback.
I’m sure that as 2010 progresses, we can expect more rumors, leaks as well as some official Apple news regarding the new iPhone.

Horizon Fuel Cell Technologies has announced the release of a small hydrogen fuel cell system that is compact enough to be fitted into a remote control toy car. The system was not designed to meet the needs of the low end market, but rather, it was developed for the most serious of hobbyists who may be looking for completely different options for a power system.
In addition to the hydrogen fuel cell system, Horizon also announced the availability of an optional solar powered fuel infrastructure kit that is capable of utilizing both sun and wind power to convert a stored water source into hydrogen fuel which is then collected in solid state cartridges.
Outside of this, Horizon has been a bit limited with the information provided other then to say that their new power system has a total capacity of 12Wh and that compared to standard batteries that are typically found in R/C cars, the Horizon system should offer a 3-4 times improvement in endurance.
The Horizon system certainly won’t offer nitro car like performance, but from the below YouTube video, it does hold its own and is worth a peak. The new power kits should be available around the middle of next month with price still to be announced.

Google just recently released a software update for Nexus One phone users, patching up a few bugs and bringing upgrades to some applications. Some of the upgrades sound particularly useful, such as the following.
Google Maps 3.4 offers new useful features, such as the use of starred items synced with maps.google.com. Now users can use their handsets or PC’s to access their favorite places. An improved search feature also lets users find places they’ve searched for previously much easier.
Another useful upgrade is the Google Maps Navigation night mode, which automatically changes the screen after dark, making it easier to navigate and drive.
Still more — Nexus One users can now pinch-to-zoom in most of their phone’s applications, such as the browser, maps, and gallery.
Google is rolling out the upgrade to all Nexus One users over the next week or two, so if you haven’t received the update yet, be patient. It should reach you shortly.

We still live in a time when having a 16MP camera is an incredible achievement. But apparently Hasselblad doesn’t think resolution technology is moving forward quickly enough, and is now offering a whopping 40MP resolution on their H4D-40 digital camera.
The H4D-40 camera sports a 40MP CCD sensor that’s almost twice the size of a 35mm DSLR sensor. Like its predecessors, this camera also capitalizes on a True Focus AF system — to make sure not a single one of those 40,000,000 pixels go to waste.
Experienced photographers who feel they’re too good for 16MP should look this beast up and down and see if it offers the quality they need. At a price tag of $19,995, the Hasselblad H4D-40 camera is obviously reserved for the uppermost echelons of photographers. The rest of us, well, we’ll just have to wait until even better technology rolls around.
Pro photographers who can deal with the $20K price tag will get the camera body, the viewfinder, and the 80mm lens in a single kit. It’s available now.

Nokia’s being the crowd-pleaser these days. The Finnish phone company just recently slashed the price tag on its Ovi Maps application. Now it’s got an extra feature that Ovi Maps users will love — Ovi Maps Racing, a game where you can race through the streets of the world.
Ovi Maps Racing is a top-down, 2-D game that lets you turn virtually any street in the world into a race course. You can create a simple race course around your block, or create one down the streets of London. You can then screech, skid, and barrel down the street at top speed without worrying about getting fined.
There’s another great thing about Ovi Maps Racing — it’s free. For a free app, it should give you hours of enjoyment, provided your Nokia device runs on Symbian^1 (the S60 5th edition).
What’s next? No doubt Google (or one of its partner companies) will pick up on this idea and perhaps create a racing game using Google’s Street View. That would be sweet.

Richard Branson and Virgin’s new project seems to have the plot line for an upcoming James Bond movie. On February 20th, the billionaire entrepreneur will be launching his latest luxury vessel, the Necker Nymph.
The Necker Nymph is different from other sea going vessels in that it is being described as an underwater plane. The boat which is capable of launching from either land or sea uses a downward force applied on the wings in order to move through the ocean for up to two hours. Cruising speeds on the Nymph are between 2 to 5 nautical miles per hour and the boat (plane) can reach depths up to 100 feet.
The Nymph is capable of carrying two passengers as well as a pilot and during the voyage, passengers will be treated to a 360-degree underwater panoramic view. As part of the safety regulations and requirements, both riders will be required to follow standard suba procedures as well as be trained or accompanied by a certified pilot.
If you guessed this isn’t going to be cheap, you are correct. The underwater plane is available to rent at $25,000 per week for guests that are staying at Richard Branson’s luxury property called Necker Island. A one week stay at this private island will add an extra $300,000 to the final bill.
The only question left is who is the Bond girl?

Product: Palm Pre Plus vs. Palm Pixi Plus
Manufacturer: Palm
Wired Rating: 0
Oh Palm. You guys try so hard but always get trounced by iPhone and Android. It’s like you’re the Washington Generals of smartphones! But unlike the hapless generals, your two newest devices, the Pixi Plus and Pre Plus, are pretty decent with some admittedly awesome features. But how do the two stack up against each other? And more importantly, how the hell do you tell them apart? Here, let Wired give you the lowdown.
What’s New
Palm’s Pixi Plus and Pre Plus look almost exactly like their Sprint cousins, yet a couple goodies have been added to warrant the “Plus” appelations. First, they’re both exclusive to Verizon. Palm finally crammed Wi-Fi support into the Pixi’s tiny chassis, a much needed addition.
Similarly, the Pre gains some considerable bumps to both its memory and storage capacity, making the already powerful device even more muscular.
Both phones also get a new mobile hotspot feature, which essentially lets users turn the phones’ 3G data connection (which is pretty fast thanks to Verizon’s network) into a Wi-Fi network that other devices can connect to.
Despite these new datacentric features (and a few minor design tweaks) both the Pixi and Pre behave like their former iterations.
Design
Pixi Plus
While the Pre Plus has a nifty keyboard redesign, the Pixi Plus gets … a nifty Verizon sticker. There was already a lot to love in the Pixi’s original pocket-perfect form factor, so we can forgive Palm for playing it safe. The only setback to this strategy is that the minor foibles return, too. The slightly cramped keyboard is still an issue, and we’re still firm believers that the black bar located under the 2.6-inch display (which is reserved for minor navigation gestures) should be incorporated into the screen itself. That said, it’s a very compact device and its usefulness-to-size ratio outstrips that of most smartphones.
Pre Plus
If you loved the cut of the original Pre’s jib, you won’t find much to quibble about with the new Verizon version. The smooth pebble form-factor returns, along with a 320 x 480 capacitive touchscreen and slide-out keypad. In fact, there are really only a handful subtle physical differences between the Plus and the original Sprint version. For one, Palm has ditched the physical Home key button and replaced it with the same touch-sensitive area as on the Pixi Plus. We quickly grew accustomed to using the swipable LED-backlit area, and the absence of a button arguably makes the Pre Plus look even slicker. Similarly, the Plus’ keypad has also undergone a slight revamp. In lieu of the gummy keys that graced the original Pre, Palm has bestowed the Plus’ keys with some much needed clickiness. The tactile feedback helps to a degree, but the keypad layout is still extremely cramped. If you’re after a pleasant typing experience, the Pixi pwns Pre pointedly.
Performance
Pixi Plus
Since Palm didn’t tweak anything under the hood, the Pixi maintains a lot of its original lustre. It has no problems navigating and multitasking within webOS, and still seems to be a smart implementation of the “smartphone light” concept. It doesn’t have nearly as much memory or processing power as the Pre Plus, but it still has enough horsepower to juggle gaming, multimedia and productivity with a modicum of grace. Though insane-in-the-mainframe multitasking can bring it to its knees (12-plus apps running simultaneously), it still manages to zip between tasks without more than the occasional brief “Loading” message.
Pre Plus
While the Pre Plus’ exterior remains largely unchanged, you will notice a world of difference once you fire up the phone. Under its slick ebony surface, Palm has slipped in twice the memory (256 MB to 512 MB) and doubled the phone’s storage (now 16 GB). That translates into some crazy multitasking juju. We regularly had 25 or more apps running at once before getting the dreaded “too many cards” error or noticing any significant slowdown in performance. Bottom line? With more horsepower and storage, as well as a great network, the Pre remains the undisputed multitasking king.
Battery
Pixi Plus
Energy consumption is tricky on the Pixi Plus. Because it uses the same lithium-ion battery as the previous version, it racks up roughly the same talk time (4.75 hours) and can still endure extended multimedia playback. However, the biggest new feature is also the most power-hungry. Creating and using a mobile hotspot easily killed the battery within an hour. This made us question the practicality of that feature, but Palm’s inclusion of the sexy magnetic induction “Touchstone” charger eased that pain … a little. We were able to place the Pixi on this attractive power mat and have it fully amped up within a few hours.
Pre Plus
What good is a multitasking beast if it’s constantly running out of juice? Like most smartphone manufacturers, Palm’s battery-life guidance is not really accurate. While the company gives 5.5 hours of talk time, and 350 hours in standby, we were hard pressed to squeeze a day out of the Pre Plus — even with moderate usage. And if you fire up useful new apps, like Palm’s Mobile Hotspot, expect that battery life to plummet even faster. As with the original Pre, carrying a second battery isn’t a bad idea.
Pixi Plus

WIRED So small it’ll fit nearly any pocket. New Wi-Fi and hotspot features add bite. Comes with Touchstone-ready and rugged skins. Pinch-zoomers rejoice: It sports multitouch.
TIRED So small it’ll cramp nearly any thumb. Mobile hotspot feature eats up waaaay too much juice. 2-megapixel camera is no longer acceptable. Switching skins is harder than peeling grapes.
$100 (with 2-year Verizon contract and $100 rebate)

Pre Plus

WIRED Small, but thoughtful design tweaks make the Pre even prettier. With Verizon, the Pre Plus finally gets the network (and audience) it deserves. Big boosts in RAM and storage makes elegant webOS shine even more. Still an insane multitasking machine.
TIRED Anemic battery life — especially when partaking in app orgies. Touchstone base not included with purchase. Touchscreen still not as responsive as other smartphones. Cramped keys and sub-par predictive text make typing a chore. Where are the apps? Palm’s App Catalog is still puny compared to Apple and Google’s.
$150 (with 2-year Verizon contract and $100 rebate)

Soccer is one of the world’s most popular sports because of its simplicity. All you need is a soccer ball and that’s about it. Everything else can be improvised. Don’t have an official field, play on the street, no nets, use jackets or whatever else you can find for goal posts.
Because soccer is global sport, one that is played in many African countries, four engineering students from Harvard University saw this as an opportunity to potentially generate clean free energy.
Their invention, called sOccket, consists of a specially crafted soccer ball which contains an inductive coil mechanism that is able to capture kinetic energy. As the soccer ball is in play and kicked around, a current is generated and stored in an internal battery. The concept is really not all that different from the camping flashlights that you need to shake in order to build a working charge. From their estimates, the gadgetry added to the soccer ball does not add any noticeable weight to the ball and 15 minutes of playtime is sufficient to power a small LED light for up to 3 hours which in a country that still relies on dangerous kerosene lamps is pretty exceptional.
